Guroo enjoys its' most successful period ever.

Guroo enjoys its' most successful period ever.

Not really a surprise as in just 3 months Guroo has added amongst many other things:
  • Almost 40 English, ICT and maths tutorial videos - high quality, high impact and suitable for tutors who need a refresh and learners developing new skills.  Watch one of the latest English videos "Reading between the lines" about fact, opinion, bias and implicit meaning.
  • Unique Exam Practice questions that are proving incredibly popular with learners and tutors alike (tutors especially like the detailed mark schemes on pdf, often sharing these with learners).
  • KISS Assess - a brand new simple and straightforward self registered assessment tool that produces a full Functional Skills diagnostic report - ideal for use to check skills in pre-recruitment and pre-enrolment with prices starting at just 95p.  Call us and we'll set-you up a free trial or webinar.
And don't forget that with Guroo you get fantastic resources plus the most rigorous, comprehensive Functional Skills assessment and diagnostic that takes the average student just 53 minutes per subject to complete - and it's available on-line, off-line and on paper.
Since September almost 100,000 unique learners have used the Guroo system - more than 3 times as many as in the same period in the previous year, and Guroo measure unique visitors who actually log-in (using Google Analytics), not "users" who are registered on a database but never go anywhere near a log in.
To celebrate, the Guroo guys have come up with some extra special Christmas "pressies" for both old and new customers. But as with all "pressies", we'll keep them wrapped and secret, but you must "open" them in time for Christmas.  So whether you're considering adding more licences, or indeed joining Guroo for the first time, call or email Cathy on 07595 120913 (Southern'ish based customers), Daisy on 07737 317735 (Northern'ish based customers), or Jonathan on 07753 822393 (anywhere, he doesn't mind).

But do it quickly, these offers are genuinely for Christmas only!

PISA - more bad news for UK Education

PISA - more bad news for UK schools
And as if to emphasise the issues raised above in the case of Apprenticeships, PISA, the international comparison of educational achievement run by OECD came out recently.
England and NI did badly, Scotland was slightly better and Wales came off worst, All four home nations sit well down the rankings with no relative improvement on an international basis. Interestingly, and only perhaps because the Government has used this country as an example of good practice, Sweden came 38th, some 15 places behind the UK average.

GCSE or Functional Skills - has the Government blundered over Apprenticeships?

The largest discussion ever within the linked-in group Apprenticeships 4 England has centred on an issue raised in the last newsletter about GCSE vs Functional Skills in Apprenticeships.
With just short of 100 comments from 20 contributors with Roger Francis (CL Partners) and Marius Frank (SCiP5) leading the way, it makes interesting reading and it shows how much the sector believes in Functional Skills as the best way forward in vocational education.

It just shows what a big issue this one is, and with the ball still very much in play, if you have a view then take a few minutes and record it.

Newsletter Dec 10th summary

December 10th - the Functional Skills newsletter
In this issue we report on a really interesting discussion started by Roger Francis and now added to by another 20 participants - is GCSE really the right way forward for Apprenticeships? We also have the summary of PISA - more bad news about international comparisons.
But against all this and much closer to home, we have some really good news from the Guroo guys (who employ me to write this newsletter) about special Christmas Offers, a lins to one of the latest English Functional Skills video "Reading between the lines" and of course an update on recorded webinars, an increasingly popular resource within the Functional Skills community
As always, we aim to send this newsletter out every two weeks, (except during holidays such as Christmas) your comments and thoughts are always appreciated - let us know what you'd like us to cover in the newsletter by emailing the editor - jwells@guroo.co.uk

Functional Skills Newsletter, 26th November

In this issue we come back to the issue of English and maths and how policy is developing.  Whilst the short term is secure (GCSE or Functional Skills) there may be lots of changes planned for 2017 when the requirement for continuing study in English and maths will be "stepped up".
We've also got news of an important new product from Guroo - KISS Assessment for Functional Skills is a simple and straightforward assessment that produces a full diagnostic for Functional Skills - and nothing else and is designed for those who just "want the diagnostic".  Finally, we have news of recorded and live webinars.

GCSE, Bite Size or Functional Skills in 2017?
In the words of the late Clive Dunn "don't panic", as it will be four years before any changes are likely to come into place.  Nevertheless, policy is being formed as we speak so it's a timely chance to look at the options for English and maths, and indeed for vocational education as a whole.
We've seen over the last few weeks a definite shift in moving Apprenticeships "upmarket". Research from EDGE and C&G suggests that employers agree with this view, the BBC report on the same subject was equally supportive.
Common to all these themes is the need to put more emphasis on English and maths.  Last month, The Government indicated GCSE was their preferred "long term aim", AELP rejected this saying GCSE wasn't fit for purpose with limited assessment windows and supported Functional Skills.  This week, we see support for "Stepping Stone or Progression" qualifications as being another route towards GCSE, not unreasonable as these "bite sized" qualifications are often described as "little bits of Functional Skills".
So the outcome? None yet, but if you have a view, let us know and we'll try to draw views together.
Simple, straightforward self-registered initial assessment and diagnostic from Guroo - now available from 95p
In direct response to customer demand, the Guroo guys have developed a brand new, simple, straightforward, easy to use, "does what it says on the tin" initial assessment for Functional Skills that produces a detailed diagnostic mapped to all Functional Skills criteria automatically and instantly.
We've called it KISS Assess for Functional Skills.  Why KISS?  It's a bit of an in-house secret but if you call us, we'll tell you!
KISS Assess for Functional Skills uses self -registration, so it's absolutely perfect for pre-recruitment or interview where you'd like potential learners to arrive with a completed Functional Skills level and diagnostic.
A typical learner will complete each subject assessment in around 40 minutes, and with no tutor marking needed, plus Guroo's famous rigour and expert knowledge of Functional Skills comes as standard.
Want to know more - call us and we'll show you in a webinar, or join us on Wednesday at 4.00pm for KISS Functional Skills webinar.
OCR Blog - Initial and Diagnostic Assessment - an engaging tool?
A nice little piece looking at some of the wider advantages of a rigorous initial assessment and diagnostic tool written by Garry Haynes of OCR.
It also brings attention back to the need for rigour in initial assessment, and with the Ofsted focus on "stretch", using an initial assessment and diagnostic tool that is rigorous is very important.  After all, a learner with a marginal level 1 assessment will be expected to move straight to level 2, a challenge for many learners in that category.
If you'd like to receive a copy of the White Paper - Initial Assessment in Functional Skills, simply email us and we'll send you a pdf copy by return.
Wednesday Webinar at 4.00pm
"KISS Assess for Functional Skills" is Wednesday's webinar with Jonathan Wells, on Wednesday 27th November at 4pm.
A guided tour of the simple and straightforward assessment tool that produces a full Functional Skills diagnostic and nothing else!  We record every session as we know that many more people enjoy coming back for the recording afterwards, so if you want to join or just want to watch the recording, just drop an email to info@guroo.co.uk

Newsletter November 12th

November 12th - the Functional Skills newsletter
Sharp eyed readers will have noticed that the normal fortnightly newsletter didn't arrive last week.  A combination of the editors (my) hard disk crashing, house move and man flu (please no sympathy needed) led to a one week delay.
So this week we have articles on the Government's focus on English and maths, an update on events and webinars, and support for Functional Skills from AELP.
As always, we aim to send this newsletter out every two weeks, your comments and thoughts are always appreciated - let us know what you'd like us to cover in the newsletter by emailing the editor - jwells@guroo.co.uk
AELP backs Functional Skills
"Functional Skills can deliver what employers need" is the headline of a piece by Stella Turner of the AELP in supporting Functional Skills in Apprenticeships published by FE Week.  Stella goes on to say:
"Employers are beginning to recognise that as well as developing vital skills in English and maths, functional skills can help young people apply skills to different contexts, solve problems, use their initiative and work independently."
AELP support for Functional Skills comes hard on the heels of various Government announcements about the future of Maths and English in Apprenticeships (see next article).
Massive changes to Maths and English planned by 2017
The Government lead the way with multiple announcements about Maths and English with the publication of the Apprenticeship Implementation Plan. New GCSE's lasting two years with a single end of course exam; a requirement for all learners to continue studying maths to age 18, even where GCSE A*-C has already been obtained; changes to the way GCSE are graded and performance tables work; there really is a lot going at the moment, most of it with a medium term outlook. For more detailed information, the BBC report on GCSE grades and the FE Week 16 page supplement about Maths and English including Functional Skills are worth a good read.   It can be hard to summarise as the picture does change regularly, but it looks like the key dates to consider at the moment are:
  • From 2017/18, all apprenticeships will be based on the new standards with relevant changes to the funding frameworks.
  • A transition period starting 2015 will lead to this with new Apprenticeship standards and qualifications developed (to replace frameworks) in 2013 and 2014.
  • The requirements for English maths start to get implemented from September 2014 when, irrespective of framework requirements, all learners will be required to study to level 2 Functional Skills
Stronger requirements from 2015 eventually leading to the requirement that all apprenticeships will need to have GCSE English and Maths (likely to be from 2017 and based on the new GCSE specifications with first teaching in 2015).

Apprenticeship Reform -

Key Dates
From 2017/17, all apprenticeships will be based on the new standards with relevant changes to the funding frameworks.  A transition period starting 2015 will lead to this with new Apprenticeship standards and qualifications developed (to replace frameworks) in 2013 and 2014.
The requirements for English maths start to get implemented from September 2014 when, irrespective of framework requirements, all learners will be required to study to level 2 Functional Skills with stronger requirements from 2015 eventually leading to the requirement that all apprenticeships will need to have GCSE English and Maths (likely to be from 2017 and based on the new GCSE specifications with first teaching in 2015).

Summary
All Apprenticeships will be required to last at least 12 months with no exceptions
English and maths requirements will be stepped up gradually, reflecting the importance of these transferable skills.

In the section - What is an apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship develops transferable skills, including English and maths, to progress careers.

In the section - Employers setting the standards
Any new standard may specify the level of English and maths achievement required if this is above the general requirements for all apprentices and specify any qualifications that are necessary.

In the section - English and maths
We are making sure the new GCSEs (first teaching 2015, first exams 2017) give greater assurance of literacy and numeracy, and why we are requiring all students in full or part-time education aged 16 to 19 to study towards GCSE English and maths if they have not already achieved a GCSE A*-C in these subjects.
All apprentices will be required to achieve a certain standard of English and maths in order to complete their Apprenticeship. The English and maths requirements will be stronger in future Apprenticeships. (Transition starts 2105 with full implementation 2017)
We are not setting any minimum entry requirements relating to an apprentice’s English and maths skills, and expect employers to be flexible in recruiting apprentices with lower initial English and maths skills.
We are stepping up the English and maths requirements in Apprenticeships gradually. From September 2014 every Intermediate (Level 2) apprentice who has previously achieved Functional Skills Level 1 English and maths will have to study towards Level 2 English and maths (either Functional Skills or GCSE). All Intermediate apprentices will have to achieve a minimum of Level 1 English and maths to complete their Apprenticeship, as now. Advanced (Level 3) apprentices will have to achieve Level 2 English and maths to complete their Apprenticeship, as now.

England's young adults "trailing the world" in literacy and maths
This has been the story of the last couple of weeks.  Technically, England doesn't trail the world (as the USA is bottom) but it isn't a very good picture at all.  The OECD report is here, a nice touch is that you can compare different age groups too; England doesn't do so bad with older people!  There were lots of news reports about the focus on young people though:
The BBC led with the headline used at the beginning of this article.
The Guardian went for "nothing short of a national disgrace".
The Government appeared to want to blame FE Colleges; however this seemed to be a little bit of bluster to divert attention away from themselves and their over-reliance on grade C GCSE.  FE Week reported MP's "sadness".
Whichever line you believe, there is no doubt that the whole system needs a complete rethink, perhaps with a distinct move away from GCSE towards getting the basics right by using Functional Skills as the GCSE hurdle for which it was originally designed?
Guroo Open Training is a three hour training session (including break) on how to use Guroo to support the teaching of Functional Skills.
A new innovative method of delivering high quality but low cost face to face training, the first session will be in Milton Keynes on 26th November.  If this proves popular and sells out, don't worry, simply let Cathy (who's organising them) know and we'll add some more dates and locations.
The sessions will be led by Sally Bryant, an experienced Functional Skills practitioner, author and examiner, the session will take you through the Functional Skills Learner Journey and the tutor experience using all aspects of the Guroo system.  During the session we'll cover:
  • Initial assessment and diagnostic
  • Using teaching and learning resources
  • Preparing for external assessments
  • Group and user admin
  • Reports and tracking
Open training is for anyone who uses Guroo as part of their tutor/assessor role.  The course size is typically 8 up to a maximum of 20 delegates from several establishments.  You must bring your own wifi enabled laptop to get the best from the session - wifi is provided.  If you do try to book and it's full, please let us know straight away and we'll add more events and locations to meet demand.

Key events coming up
The AELP conference is happening Tuesday 22nd October in Birmingham.  Guroo will be there of course showing all of the new features and additions to Guroo 3.1 released since the summer.

Shocking Results

Young adults in England have scored among the lowest results in the industrialised world in international literacy and numeracy tests.  21/24 in Literacy and 22/24 in Numeracy.

Functional Skills Newsletter

October 8th - the Functional Skills newsletter
This week’s Functional Skills newsletter has a summary of the main political parties’ education policy as related to 16-25 year olds plus news of more funding for traineeships.
Closer to home, the results of the Functional Skills Annual Survey are now in with an amazing response rate of more than 400!  The Wednesday webinar will focus on the top level findings and as always will be recorded with links provided in future newsletters.

Policy statements
With the main political conference season just recently closed, it's worth having a little look at the main policies being put forward.
The Conservatives majored on "Earning or Learning" with a threat to remove welfare benefits for 1 million young adults under 25 who are not in Education, Training or Employment.  In his speech, David Cameron said "It’s time for bold action here. We should ask, as we write our next manifesto, if that option should really exist at all. Instead, we should give young people a clear, positive choice: go to school. Go to college. Do an apprenticeship. Get a job. But just choose the dole? We’ve got to offer them something better than that."
The Labour Party promised to implement "many of the recommendations from the independent Skills Taskforce in particular improving vocational learning in FE and adopting a benchmark in apprenticeships of L3."  The Pearson think tank has a great summary of all three parties position.
The Lib Dems policy adopted by conference includes support for traineeships  "For those with no work experience, we support the introduction of six month traineeships which combine structured job search, continuing English, Maths and ICT support for those who need it and work experience in return for an allowance." and mandatory skills training for 18-24 year olds "It is vital that mandatory skills training under the new Universal Credit regime is of sufficient duration to allow unemployed younger adults to achieve qualifications up to full Level 3 qualifications.
More funding for traineeships
As apprenticeships move steadily up the rigour and value chain, there is lots more focus on the 6 month long traineeships with the latest announcement a very interesting one as it applies solely to 19-23 year olds.
An extra £20m of funding has been allocated to the traineeship programme that offers workplace experience alongside Functional Skills in English & maths plus employability training.
