Carol Vorderman fronting the maths campaign

Whist it's absolutely true that the Government report says that Functional Skills should be applied in English as well, it's great that Ms Vorderman is able to bring such good publicity about the issue of Functional maths.
Keep it up, but let's not beat about the bush, let's say Functional maths please.
I shall write more on this later today when I've had a chance to review the interviews with Carol on R4, ITV Daybreak and BBC News.

However, does this issue need a celebrity "maths poster girl" heading it, or should it be led education research professionals, who understand how the education system works (See my own article). Many teachers at primary schools are unhappy with the prescriptive way maths is taught, with time pressures being that pupils are forced to move on because they allocated time is coming. There are massive issues in how maths is taught in secondary and primary education. There is not enough practical experience, it is not functional, unfortunately with Ms Vorderman presenting a revolutionary, simplistic solution, such as compulsory maths to the age of 18, does not give this issue the proper scrutiny that it needs. I like the idea of 'Functional Maths' and your concept of functional skills in education. Keep your ideas flowing and your campaign going.

Kind Regards
